Connecting Essay 1

This photograph was taken by Alexander Khoklov, and it was taken from his 'Weird Beauty' portfolio. In this series he works closely with makeup artists who draw on the design, in this photograph the design is a pop art character, he then touches up the designs in post production. In this image he uses bold colours in the hair colour and from the bright red lipstick and dots all over the models face. The black lines are also bold, which help to define the image. This image can be contextualised to show that beauty can be shown in ways that aren't the normal commercialised way. The models face is also in a doll/cartoon like pose, which is helping to show the theme of pop art. The black lines are carried on to the models chest to further define the models bones, as well as throughout the hair and on the hairline. I feel like this helps to create a better overall image which displays the pop art them well.

This is one of my images which i have taken from a home shoot, i was inspired by Alexander Khoklovs work and so i wanted to try to recreate the image above. However as i was applying the face paint to myself, and it did not come out very bold from the paint alone, i felt it was necessary to go onto Photoshop and to go over all of the lines, dots and tear drop with the brush tool. I feel by doing this it has helped to define the lines and make the colours, it also creates a better pop art look as it looks more artificial, which is what it would look like in a comic book. As my hair is naturally a light blonde it was difficult to make it stand out against my skin tone and so did not add to effect, so i though it would be best to alter the colour from blonde to green in the post production process. I feel that overall this image has created a good pop art style of photograph, as it has similar characteristics to normal pop art images.

This images are connected as they are both showing the pop art theme in both of the images. Also both images have used a mixture of pre shoot makeup as well as post production editing, which has helped to bring out the colours of the images and make them bolder which has helped to create the overall pop art/ comic character style of beauty. They are both showing beauty in an unconventional way as it is showing the style of beauty that would be present in comic books and strips and not the way that would be displayed in a magazine such as cosmopolitan.
