3000 Word Essay on the topic of Beauty

Beauty

Beauty is a prominent subject in today’s society as due to the media women can become obsessed with trying to become the ‘perfect woman’ etc. from the image of the 'perfect' and airbrushed models; and so it is important to study the different aspects of beauty in order to gain an understanding on the depth of the topic. Beauty can be defined as 'a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight' (Oxford Online Dictionary). It can be said that individuals views beauty differently and therefore what is deemed beautiful to one person would differ to another, and so the concept of inner beauty may be valued more to some. Inner beauty refers to a nice personality and similar traits, however this is harder to capture in photography and so the outer beauty tends to be focused on in 'beauty' shoots.

History

The first fashion magazines, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue – both founded in the late 1800’s – were initially illustrated by hand. It was not until Conde Nast hired Baron Adolph de Meyer in 1913 to shoot portraits of models, actresses and aristocrats for Vogue that photographs began to be used in fashion editorials. An early example of beauty/fashion photography is that of Horst P Horst. This is his photograph Mainbocher Corset from 1939. Historically corsets were used as a tool to make models waists smaller and so they appear skinny, as this is what is deemed as beautiful by society. This trend can still be seen today in the selection process, as thin models are still preferred over other body sizes. At this time black and white photographs were the only form available and so this may have limited the creativity of fashion and beauty photographers, as it restricts photographers from capturing colour and showing the designs of clothing and the colours of models makeup in its full form. However, the use of black and white photography is used as an editing form for several photographers today. This may be because when there is too much colour in a picture it is harder to focus on the subject of the image. Also black and white images keep you focused on the composition and texture of the image; it allows you to focus on shapes, light, shadows, lines and perspective within the photograph. It also gives the effect of elegance on certain images and so it is still a very common technique used within the beauty industry.

Photographers Review

The use of photography as an advertising tool did not become popular until the early 20th century. Today fashion and beauty photography can be shot in several different forms as the boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred as photographers are bringing a sense of surrealism into their work as they are manipulating their images to provide an escape from everyday reality through the world of high fashion, celebrities and beautiful people. An example of this can be seen in Mario Testino’s work.
This photograph is of Cara Delevingne, a supermodel, Mario has poured foundation or a similar paint like substance onto her face and it is running down her face as he has captured this image. This abstract photograph connotes the efforts women in the media and society to go to look 'beautiful' as the liquid can symbolise all the makeup she wears in order for a shoot to occur. It shows her with an emotionless face and this makes the image feel more serious as it is conveying a subtle message of the realistic makeup application that occurs in photo shoots across to the viewers. The final image women see in magazines should therefore not be taken too seriously, or allow it to affect their own confidence. This photograph demonstrates an element of surrealism in his work as he has taken the normal style of beauty and added his own twist on it. The use of colour in photography has affected the beauty advertising industry as it shows the bold colour - which adds to the effect of certain images – of products used on models or in cosmetic images. For example in this photograph by Testino, we know the paint on her face is representing foundation etc. due to the colour of it on her skin. However if this image was shot it black and white then we would not be as certain that it was foundation as it could be any type/colour of paint.

A difference in beauty advertisements can be seen, as the older ads tend to use more illustrated images whereas the newer ads are using actual models etc. The quality has also improved since the introduction of Photoshop; photographers can now manipulate their images to airbrush models skin to remove any imperfections and it is also used to make models thinner and create the idea of the ‘perfect body’. This has affected society dramatically as it has caused a lot of young women to have insecurities and eating disorders etc. whereas this was not a problem before the invention of Photoshop and the selection of size zero models. Not only has the photography of beauty evolved but so has the products that are used as well. The evolution in makeup began in 1910 when T.L Williams formulated the first mascara, which is known today as Maybelline. 10 years later makeup was then the product of mass marketing. This would be when beauty photography really began to take off. Now the market for makeup products is extremely vast and so there is a large range of photographers who can shoot the advertisements for products.
This photograph demonstrates the power of Photoshop, the image on the left is before any editing has been done and the one on the right is after; the skin is visibly smoother and all of the freckles have been removed. This creates a flawless look on the model. This shows that the images used in adverts etc. have been digitally manipulated most of the time and so create unrealistic expectations for women in today's society. This may provoke the thoughts of the lengths photographers go to into creating the ‘perfect’ image etc., the use of this method in photography while it is good for the products being advertised, it is setting an unrealistic bar for women and men in today's society to achieve.

The style of beauty photography has certainly become more abstract as the years have progressed, the photographs have move from simple portraiture images to more unique photographs using different techniques like high key and close ups.

One photographer who has a unique portfolio of images would be Rankin. Rankin is a British photographer who came to fame when he released a magazine called Dazed and Confused. His beauty portfolio http://rankin.co.uk/beauty/ has a vast range of images, which has an exciting spin on beauty photography, instead of shooting normal portraiture Rankin uses a signature style and makes the photographs so much more interesting. This photograph takes a comedic spin on beauty; he has added a blonde wig with some blue ribbons and both fake eyes and eyelashes, to models chins to make it look like a face. This is not the typical way to show beauty but this may provoke viewers to take a less serious outlook on life and beauty. By adding a twist to this photograph. By using a coloured background it contrasts with the light tone of the skin and so makes the chin face stand out. Rankin uses the element of colour extremely well in his images all of his photographs are bold and bright. This makes his photographs eye catching and so gains the viewers attention.

This is another photograph of Rankin’s, in the image above a more comical take on beauty is shown but this does not reflect his style. All of his work uses bright bold and saturated colours. I feel this image is more representative of his style as it captures a model with bold makeup on whilst using his own unique style of portraying it. The model has half her face showing through a zigzag shaped cut out. As this cut out is white it makes the bold yellow eye shadow and the red lipstick stand out more against her skin tone. He is using the contrast of bold colours whilst using the interesting shape of the white object to portray beauty in a more compelling way than a standard portrait image would.

Beauty photography can also be shown using products instead of just models. This can be seen from Courtney Dailey’s work. Dailey is an American photographer who specialises in fashion and beauty photography and like Rankin she uses the element of colour well in her work. The type of colour used most commonly in her work is saturated colour – similar to that to Rankin – which helps to make the different elements within the photograph stand out. By using such bold saturated colours she has made the image eye catching and creates more of an image I like her series of photographs in which she uses sweets in a similar colour to that of the beauty product, the addition of these sweets compliment the product and the colours and so make this photograph more interesting than the normal style of cosmetic photography. By using a white background she has made a high key effect, which makes the objects being shot bold and so the colours stand out more against the background.

This is another photograph shot by Courtney Dailey. Again the use of saturated colours can be seen as well as her use of a high key technique. The colours are bold and by using a high key technique of a bright white background makes the colours stand out more. She also has arranged the lipsticks in a way that the colours get darker as they go down the rows. This means that the colours do not clash and make it soft on the eye to look at, the use of the colours in this photograph show the range of colours that the lipstick brand has to offer. Due to the clarity of the image, the colours of the lipsticks look very pigmented and so this would positively promote the brand. The use of the high key technique is very common within Dailey’s work as it makes colours look bolder and it captures the details within the products being shot extremely well due to the fact there are no other background colours or objects distracting the focus from the actual product being shot.

Cyril Lagel is a French fashion and beauty photographer who won the beauty photographer of the year award in 2014. Her images display a concept of simple beauty as her photographs are not busy and so it allows her to capture the beauty of the models effortlessly. This photograph is simple as there is a model with natural makeup holding flowers. This connotes that there are two forms of beauty; the natural beauty of the flowers and then the more cosmetic beauty of the model as she is wearing makeup etc. As the makeup is not dramatic it does not distract the viewers from looking at the beauty of both the model and the flower. The use of Photoshop is clear in this image due to her flawless skin that can only be achieved in post-production touch ups. This also highlights the use of Photoshop as a common tool amongst the beauty industry to give the illusion that this perfect skin pictured is as a result of using the products being advertised.

Personal Work

This is a photograph of mine and I experimented the outcomes of images using gels in front of the light to manipulate the colour of the light being projected onto the objects, which were being photographed. I took 5 lipsticks and arranged them into a triangle formation; I did this so the range of colours would be visible and go from having the darker shades at the back of the triangle with the lighter shade at the point of the triangle. This was to show the range of colours as well as making the effect of the colours gradually becoming lighter shades.  I also took this photo using different coloured gels e.g. Blue, pink, and orange, however I thought that the pink gel added a certain feminine effect, which is a theme that is associated with cosmetic products and beauty photography due to the stereotypes placed upon the beauty industry that makeup is for women and that pink is a feminine colour and so due to this the effect the gels has created would lead to more females being attracted to the image and to the product being shown.

This is another one of my photographs from a personal shoot focusing on the appreciation of beauty. To capture this I asked my model to pose in ways, which she felt comfortable, and so this also captured some of her personality in the images. It shows that not all shoots need to be serious and this is captured through some of the more playful, less serious images in the series of photographs. Similarly to Rankin I wanted to capture a less serious collection of images, as I feel more playful shoots show beauty well due to the natural nature of them. I decided to use selective colour in the postproduction editing, I feel that this emphasises the bold colours of the headscarf as the green and orange both contrast with each other due to them both being bright colours. I thought this was also a good technique as the black and white colouring of the photograph has made the dark contouring on the models cheek stand out more than it would had the picture been in colour which is capturing the models makeup and is showing the element of beauty through this.

Future
As the beauty industry continues to grow with the development of more and more products every year, there will always be a place for beauty photography in today’s society. As the boundaries of society blur more there will be room for beauty photography to evolve and so artists will be able to use take surreal images in shoots and publish them in magazines. There may also be changes in the way photographers edit their images in postproduction editing, by this there would be a reduction in unrealistic images which have been touched up by smoothing skin and reducing imperfections in models. This change may occur due to the reasons that many women are struggling with anxieties created from viewing these images and so are no longer willing to accept that these images are showing natural models etc., due to the decrease in popularity the photographers may have to revisit their editing techniques. Life expectancy is also rising meaning that companies will continue producing products to promote healthy and younger skin as well as cosmetics used to create an illusion of youth and so photographers will be able to show these new products in new ways as the industry changes.

Conclusion
Beauty remains a very important and dominant feature of society today and in the future, and so it is important to study and explore as it affects everyone in different ways. Beauty photography is also a key feature as this is the way the industry is able to portray itself, and so by studying the images produced it will be able to give us an insight into the industry itself. Photography techniques will also evolve just as Photoshop has, and beauty photography will grow with this and continue to develop in future years.

Photographer 5 - Yulia Gorbachenko

Yulia Gorbachenko
Yulia Gorbachenko is a fashion and beauty photographer from New York City. She uses a mixture of portraiture and still life shots for her work. Her portraiture work is of her models with either certain products on their faces for advertisements or with her models made up in different makeup styles.

This photograph is showing different sponges/applicators on the palm of someones hand, going in the pattern of 1 pink and then 2 white. This makes the pink applicators stand out. There is also some powder which looks like a setting/loose powder which is falling on top of all the applicators, to capture this Yulia would need to have a quick shutter speed. The background is a dark colour so that the colours of the sponges etc. stand out more.

This photograph is showing a model with a salt scrub on her face, this adds a certain texture to her face which is detectable through the image. The green colour of her eye is bold and eye catching as it is the only colour in a very neutral image. The lighting of this image looks as if the light has been angled and so is only shining on one side of the models face.

This is a very textured image as it is showing a powdery substance on top of the lipstick and due to the close up technique used it captures this detail well. The colour is bold and pigmented and this contrasts to the dark shadowing on the surrounding skin.

This photograph is showing a model with bright eye shadow and lipstick, the light is highlighting the facial part of the model and the background behind the model has no light and a dark background has been used. This makes the colours used on the model stand out boldy.

I like Yulias work as it captures several different textures within several different images. I would like to try and experiment with textures of products in some of my images as I like the overall effect this has on the photographs.

In summary, Yulia's work uses a mixture of colour and texture in her photography, I also like her usage of the close up technique as I feel this gains an in depth sight into the textures etc.

Photographer 4 - Alexander Khoklov

Alexander Khoklov
Khoklov is a Russian award winning photographer who is known worldwide for his eye-tricking portraits based on the mix of face-art and different textures. His most popular series of photographs were his 'Weird Beauty' and '2D or not 2D', which were made with the collaboration with Valeriya Kutsan, the makeup artist. His work uses a mixture of face art, photography and post production efforts to create his extremely interesting photographs.
2D or not 2D
This is a photograph out of his 2D or not 2D series. I like this photograph as it is demonstrating a similar sense of design as that of Picasso's cubism portraits. This photograph is showing an array of colours which although do not compliment each other they do not harshly clash on the models face. With a mixture of skilled make-up application and post-production editing, he has been able to create this design on the models face. I would like to try and experiment with editing a similar style of work using photoshop as i would not be skilled enough to paint it onto a model.

2D or not 2D
This is a photograph which has been taken in the style of pop-art which is a style that has become popular through Andy Warhol's art. I like this photograph as it is unique and shows the concept of beauty as it would if this woman was in a comic book etc. This is a different style to several other beauty photographers and it is interesting as he has chosen to show the concept of beauty in his own original style which can be seen throughout his work. I would like to try and re-create a similar style of image in my own work as it is a different way of portraying beauty.

Weird Beauty series
This photograph is showing a model who has half her face painted white and on the other half of her face, it has been painted black. But it has been painted in such a way that the black half looks like a side view, this creates an illusion as the model is actually facing forward. This was a photograph taken from his weird beauty series. It is representing beauty as it is showing that there are several different faces to beauty, and that which ever angle is seemed beautiful is decided by the viewer.

2D or not 2D
This photograph is showing a model who has got paint running down their face, this is representing a watercolour effect. The paints poured on this model are not dark heavy colours which reinforces the idea of water coloured images. I like this image as it is showing beauty in a more symbolic way, the paint can represent the makeup worn to try and fit the standards set in todays society, melting of her face to show the volume of makeup worn.

In summary i like Khoklov's work as he takes a unique spin on the concept of beauty photography, he turns his wacky ideas and uses them to portray beauty in a way which will capture the audiences attention.

I have tried to take my own spin on the pop-art style similar to his photographs, i hand painted the pop art look onto my face and used a timer to capture the images. I then progressed these photographs by editing them in photoshop to touch up all of the rough edges on the paint and to make the hair yellower.

Photographer 3 - Courtney Dailey

Courtney Dailey

Courtney is a beauty photographer based in Los Angeles, she is known for her use of colour and delivers colourful and dramatic photographs.

This photograph is showing several make-up products all with similar orange and yellow tones. And so the additional sweets added are in a similar colour as to compliment the colours of the products. I like the way she has used different materials in this shoot to make the make-up shoot more fun and interesting. Courtney would have had to use a high key technique as there is minimal shadowing in the photograph, the white background makes the colours of the products and sweets bold and so they stand out.

This photograph is showing several different blusher pans which have all been slightly broken to add texture to the photograph. They are all in different shades which contrasts with one another. The use of crushing the pans has made the photograph appear more informal as they are not all perfectly rounded and smooth. The technique used on this photograph was most likely to have been close up, as the grains of the powders are detected on the pans.

This photograph shows 7 different different lipsticks which have all been cut and arranged in the order of shades from light to dark. this shows the range of colours clearly and boldly. the technique used would be high key as their is no shadowing and the products are very prominent against the page.

Similarly to Courtney's lipstick photograph above, the 6 strips of eyelashes have been arranged in order of thickness from thin to thick. This shows the range of thickness' clearly as they are lined up together. Again a high key technique must have been used when shoot this as there is no shadowing and the background is a bright white colour.

Courtney's work has inspired me to work more with high key techniques especially when shooting close up shots of make-up products. I would also like to experiment with using similar coloured products in the shoots that are similar to the colour of the make-up products that are being used.

Photographer 2 - Jamie Nelson

Jamie Nelson

Jamie Nelson is a commercial photographer who was born in Texas but is now based in New York. Her work mainly focuses on fashion and beauty photography, her work can be seen in international editions of Vouge, Elle, Cosmopolitan , Vanity Fair and several others. She has colaberated with several brands such as benefit, urban decay and maybelline.

This photograph is from her collaboration with maybelline. I liked this photograph as it shows the brush being used with the application of the product aswell as the product on the models lips, I like the way this looks.

This photograph is showing a model staring into the camera, the bright pink eye makeup on the model makes her eyes and her eyeshadow the main focus of the image as it is what the eye is immediately focused on. The rest of the makeup is fairly plain so the attention is not taken away from the models eyes.

I like this photograph as it is using two different lip colours on different lips which do not clash together. Bold colours have been used as to show the difference of colouring in the lips. The use of the close up technique has resulted in the texture of the lip and lipstick being captured which would not have normally happened if the shoot was of the models whole face.

Photographer 1 - Rankin

Rankin

Rankin was born as John Rankin Waddell in 1966 and is a British portrait and fashion photographer. Rankin made his name in publishing by founding the magazine dazed and confused with Jefferson Hack in 1992.

This photograph is showing a macaroon with different colours on every layer, this is to contrast the colours as they are all bold. I like the way that all of the colours contrast as it makes the photograph eye catching. The model has got a coloured sugar on her lips to go with the theme of sweet/cake. To create this image I think Rankin would have used the high key technique as the background is white and the rest of the colours stand out and this is the effect created from using the high key technique.

This is a photomontage of two different pictures / makeup looks but they are both using the same colour scheme, by using this there is a pink and yellow theme to all of them images. I like the way that the picture of the eye shows the boldness of both of the colours used.

This photograph is showing a model with a flower painted on her face, her hair also has several different colours running through it.This captures the idea that flowers Are colourful objects and this is represented through Rankins' use of colour. By having a black background, the colours on the models face and hair stand out against the dark background.

Rankin focused a whole project on models lips with different paints/glitters/designs on them. He uses a close up teqnique so that the designs on the lips are captured clearly. Also by using this technique the sole focus of the image is the lips whereas if it was of the models whole face then the focus would job no longer be on the lips.

I would like to try and reproduce similar images to the ones in Rankin's lip project as I feel this could be explored with several different designs and looks.

Research Log - Beauty

1. Alexander Khoklov
Khoklov has taken several series of photographs in which incorporate the element of beauty uniquely. He uses makeup / paint to create designs on his models faces and he only uses photoshop to edit the final images. I feel his work is creative and unique as they are all different designs and i would like to try and recreate/make my own designs as i feel this makes 'beauty' images more interesting.

2. Jamie Nelson
Nelson shoots both commercial and creative beauty shoot and although her creative work is intriguing i find the commercial shoots more to my liking. They are simple photographs in which the models are made up and used to show the different makeup styles and techniques.

3. Rankin
Rankin's work uses bold colours and eye catching designs to make the image pop with colour and appeal to people. I like Rankin's work using models lips, he puts several bold patterns and designs onto models lips and then takes close up shots to capture the detail. He also uses either bright white backgrounds (high key images) or bright coloured backgrounds. These backgrounds make the models appear clearly and make them the main focus of the image.

4. Yulia Gorbachenko
Gorbachenko is another commercial beauty and fashion photographer from NYC and her work uses both portraiture in which the models either have a make-up style on them/they have got a design on them made from beauty products or she uses still life shots of the products. I would like to uses both of these styles in my own work as i feel that although they have some simplicity to them they still transmit the theme of beauty well.

5. David Parfitt
Parfitt is a still life photographer and his work with beauty is simplistic yet still makes the items in the image look good and creative. I would like to try and do this when taking still life photographs of different beauty products. He also uses mainly white  background and so uses the high key technique which makes the subject of the photograph in focus and detailed.

6. Tina Patni
Patni is a fashion and beauty photographer who does both portraiture and still life. I like her still life photography as instead of having the items with a plain background she has placed a flower there to go through the photograph. I feel this shows the contrast between natural beauty in the flowers and the artificial beauty that is produced after using the products. When i shoot still life i would like to make the photograph more interesting by placing a flower/object in there aswell.

7. Claire Harrison
http://www.claireharrisonphotography.com/beauty/
Claire’s fine art background is fundamental in the development and use of colour and ability to creative imaginative compositions. She works in the fashion and beauty fields of photography and is based in London. I liked this photograph as I felt the lip colour was citrus/ripening and so i liked the additional use of the lime being squeezed onto the models lips.

8.Carlton Davis

http://www.clmus.com/photography/carlton-davis/cosmetics
Carlton Davis is an American photogorapher who shoots cosmetics, jewelery and accessories. I like that his work is simple and it shows the products in a simple yet intriguing light. I also like that in some of his work that includes powders he has crumbled/crushed them for an added effect, I feel that this is an element of his style that i would like to encorperate into my work.

9. Zachary Goulko

http://www.goulko.com/PORTFOLIO/LIQUIDS/1
Goulko is a Moscow born photographer who's mission is to capture the essence of each of his subjects and to present its beauty to the world in fresh and unexpected ways. He mainly shoots beauty, still life, and products. I find his project using liquids very unique, like the picture above he uses liquids to make his work more interesting, and i feel like the melting Chanel logo represents a melting lipstick.

10. Rich Begany

http://www.richbeganyphoto.com
Begany is a still life photographer and he has created captivating images for some of the most dominant names in the beauty industry like MAC. His work uses the colours and textures of the products he is photographing and makes them a key feature in hus work. For example when shoot nail polish he will use the actual polishes in droplets or leak them instead of just shooting the bottle. I also like that he uses different objects in his shoots like using berrys a similar shade to the Bobbi Brown lipstick in the picture above.

11. Michael David Adams

http://michaeldavidadams.com/portfolio/beauty/beauty/
Michael David Adams is a photographer based in NYC and his work can be found on the covers and inside some of the biggest fashion and beauty magazines in the US and worldwide such as Vouge, Cosmopolition, Elle, Vanity Fair and many others. I like this photograph as i like all the different bold colours he uses as well as the use of the powdered eyeshadow on the models face, I feel this makes the image more eye catching.
12. Iain Crawford
http://www.iaincrawford.com
Iain grew up in Africa and Malaysia and he developed a passion for photography at an early age. He loves to capture images that have a strong graphic and textural quality. I found this photograph of his intriguing as it does not show beauty in the normal light, by using two models of different ages he is showing that everyone shows beauty just by being themselves no matter what age they are.

13. Steve Kraitt

http://www.kraitt.com

Kraitt is a self taught photographer from London, who specialises mainly in commercial advertising and conceptual photography. I like the work he does with paint as I feel the bold colours and unique style is captivating and it is something I would like to experiment with in my own personal project as I feel it would make my work more interesting.

14. Cyril Lagel

http://cyrillagel.com/site/
Lagel is a French photographer who mainly shoots fashion and beauty. She won the beauty photographer of the year award in 2014. Her photographs have a simple beauty to them, in the majority of them there is not much going on in them which means the photographs really focus on the concept of beauty on the models. I like this photograph because it is using something with natural beauty like the flowers with the made up face of the model which is showing the artificial beauty of the model.

15. Jayesh Pankhaia

http://www.jayeshpankhania.com
Jayesh is a London based commercial, advertising and editorial hair, macro and beauty photographer. Her work focuses on the models faces and their makeup and her macro work focuses on bright colours and designs on lips and eyes. I like her style of work but I feel it is a bit simple , and although this adds a focus onto the makeup it does not show much creativity.

16. Michael Hedge

http://www.michaelhedge.co.uk
Michael is a creative and highly technical photographer from London. I found this photograph inspiring as it captures the powder clouds produced from the collisions for the two brushes. I like the way it captures the two different shades. I would like to shoot something similar to this as I feel it is a good representation of beauty and the amount of product used when applying makeup.

17. Shun Sasaki

http://shunsasaki.com/beauty/
Sasaki is an American photographer who has a background in cinema and photography. His work is creative and bold. He shoots both beauty and fashion. His work includes shoots with models and some still life shoots using only products. When shooting his still life photography he uses interesting backgrounds to make the picture less boring that just a photograph of a product on its own.

18. Inès Dieleman
http://www.inesdieleman.com/home/
Inès graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Paris. She has become one of today's leading still life photographers for luxury, cosmetics and entertainment. I like this photograph as it shows a photograph of someone with red lips and then several different red lip products neatly arranged around the outside of the photograph. I like this style and I would like to create something similar using this idea.

Spencer Higgins draws inspiration from design, sculpture and typography for his still life photographer. He has a clean minimalist approach and I like the way his makeup product still life photographs use different shades of the products as this creates a nice effect in his photographs. I like his simplicity of shoots.

Courtney is a beauty photographer based in Los Angeles, she is known for her use of colour and the imagery she delivers is colourful, dramatic and confident. I liked this photograph of hers as she uses bight bold colours in the objects surrounding the beauty products but they are all of a similar colour and so there is a colour theme of orange and yellow.
