Research Log - Beauty

1. Alexander Khoklov
Khoklov has taken several series of photographs in which incorporate the element of beauty uniquely. He uses makeup / paint to create designs on his models faces and he only uses photoshop to edit the final images. I feel his work is creative and unique as they are all different designs and i would like to try and recreate/make my own designs as i feel this makes 'beauty' images more interesting.

2. Jamie Nelson
Nelson shoots both commercial and creative beauty shoot and although her creative work is intriguing i find the commercial shoots more to my liking. They are simple photographs in which the models are made up and used to show the different makeup styles and techniques.

3. Rankin
Rankin's work uses bold colours and eye catching designs to make the image pop with colour and appeal to people. I like Rankin's work using models lips, he puts several bold patterns and designs onto models lips and then takes close up shots to capture the detail. He also uses either bright white backgrounds (high key images) or bright coloured backgrounds. These backgrounds make the models appear clearly and make them the main focus of the image.

4. Yulia Gorbachenko
Gorbachenko is another commercial beauty and fashion photographer from NYC and her work uses both portraiture in which the models either have a make-up style on them/they have got a design on them made from beauty products or she uses still life shots of the products. I would like to uses both of these styles in my own work as i feel that although they have some simplicity to them they still transmit the theme of beauty well.

5. David Parfitt
Parfitt is a still life photographer and his work with beauty is simplistic yet still makes the items in the image look good and creative. I would like to try and do this when taking still life photographs of different beauty products. He also uses mainly white  background and so uses the high key technique which makes the subject of the photograph in focus and detailed.

6. Tina Patni
Patni is a fashion and beauty photographer who does both portraiture and still life. I like her still life photography as instead of having the items with a plain background she has placed a flower there to go through the photograph. I feel this shows the contrast between natural beauty in the flowers and the artificial beauty that is produced after using the products. When i shoot still life i would like to make the photograph more interesting by placing a flower/object in there aswell.

7. Claire Harrison

Claire’s fine art background is fundamental in the development and use of colour and ability to creative imaginative compositions. She works in the fashion and beauty fields of photography and is based in London. I liked this photograph as I felt the lip colour was citrus/ripening and so i liked the additional use of the lime being squeezed onto the models lips.

8.Carlton Davis

http://www.clmus.com/photography/carlton-davis/cosmetics
Carlton Davis is an American photogorapher who shoots cosmetics, jewelery and accessories. I like that his work is simple and it shows the products in a simple yet intriguing light. I also like that in some of his work that includes powders he has crumbled/crushed them for an added effect, I feel that this is an element of his style that i would like to encorperate into my work.

9. Zachary Goulko

http://www.goulko.com/PORTFOLIO/LIQUIDS/1
Goulko is a Moscow born photographer who's mission is to capture the essence of each of his subjects and to present its beauty to the world in fresh and unexpected ways. He mainly shoots beauty, still life, and products. I find his project using liquids very unique, like the picture above he uses liquids to make his work more interesting, and i feel like the melting Chanel logo represents a melting lipstick.

10. Rich Begany

http://www.richbeganyphoto.com
Begany is a still life photographer and he has created captivating images for some of the most dominant names in the beauty industry like MAC. His work uses the colours and textures of the products he is photographing and makes them a key feature in hus work. For example when shoot nail polish he will use the actual polishes in droplets or leak them instead of just shooting the bottle. I also like that he uses different objects in his shoots like using berrys a similar shade to the Bobbi Brown lipstick in the picture above.

11. Michael David Adams

http://michaeldavidadams.com/portfolio/beauty/beauty/
Michael David Adams is a photographer based in NYC and his work can be found on the covers and inside some of the biggest fashion and beauty magazines in the US and worldwide such as Vouge, Cosmopolition, Elle, Vanity Fair and many others. I like this photograph as i like all the different bold colours he uses as well as the use of the powdered eyeshadow on the models face, I feel this makes the image more eye catching.
12. Iain Crawford
http://www.iaincrawford.com
Iain grew up in Africa and Malaysia and he developed a passion for photography at an early age. He loves to capture images that have a strong graphic and textural quality. I found this photograph of his intriguing as it does not show beauty in the normal light, by using two models of different ages he is showing that everyone shows beauty just by being themselves no matter what age they are.

13. Steve Kraitt

http://www.kraitt.com

Kraitt is a self taught photographer from London, who specialises mainly in commercial advertising and conceptual photography. I like the work he does with paint as I feel the bold colours and unique style is captivating and it is something I would like to experiment with in my own personal project as I feel it would make my work more interesting.

14. Cyril Lagel

http://cyrillagel.com/site/
Lagel is a French photographer who mainly shoots fashion and beauty. She won the beauty photographer of the year award in 2014. Her photographs have a simple beauty to them, in the majority of them there is not much going on in them which means the photographs really focus on the concept of beauty on the models. I like this photograph because it is using something with natural beauty like the flowers with the made up face of the model which is showing the artificial beauty of the model.

15. Jayesh Pankhaia

http://www.jayeshpankhania.com
Jayesh is a London based commercial, advertising and editorial hair, macro and beauty photographer. Her work focuses on the models faces and their makeup and her macro work focuses on bright colours and designs on lips and eyes. I like her style of work but I feel it is a bit simple , and although this adds a focus onto the makeup it does not show much creativity.

16. Michael Hedge

http://www.michaelhedge.co.uk
Michael is a creative and highly technical photographer from London. I found this photograph inspiring as it captures the powder clouds produced from the collisions for the two brushes. I like the way it captures the two different shades. I would like to shoot something similar to this as I feel it is a good representation of beauty and the amount of product used when applying makeup.

17. Shun Sasaki

http://shunsasaki.com/beauty/
Sasaki is an American photographer who has a background in cinema and photography. His work is creative and bold. He shoots both beauty and fashion. His work includes shoots with models and some still life shoots using only products. When shooting his still life photography he uses interesting backgrounds to make the picture less boring that just a photograph of a product on its own.

18. Inès Dieleman
http://www.inesdieleman.com/home/
Inès graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Paris. She has become one of today's leading still life photographers for luxury, cosmetics and entertainment. I like this photograph as it shows a photograph of someone with red lips and then several different red lip products neatly arranged around the outside of the photograph. I like this style and I would like to create something similar using this idea.

19. Spencer Higgins
http://www.spencerhiggins.com
Spencer Higgins draws inspiration from design, sculpture and typography for his still life photographer. He has a clean minimalist approach and I like the way his makeup product still life photographs use different shades of the products as this creates a nice effect in his photographs. I like his simplicity of shoots.

20. Courtney Dailey

http://www.courtneydailey.com
Courtney is a beauty photographer based in Los Angeles, she is known for her use of colour and the imagery she delivers is colourful, dramatic and confident. I liked this photograph of hers as she uses bight bold colours in the objects surrounding the beauty products but they are all of a similar colour and so there is a colour theme of orange and yellow.

  1. Hello Lauren, You have mad a good start in researching a range of commercial photographers who specialise in Make-up/high end fashion accessories. You should extend you evaluations in terms of trying to analyse the photographic techniques used for example Michael Hedges photograph what kind of shutter speed might have been used.. to freeze the powders… Are there any Photoshop effects used to enhance the colours in e.g. the Courtney Dailey photograph… How do you think this photograph was taken in terms of a studio set -up… Please discuss this with me on Monday… P.s. I like the photographers that you have selected and would like to suggest some more Graeme Montgomery http://www.graememontgomery.com… These suggestions are made to help you to consider the assessment objectives for AQA photography. e.g. AO1 and AO2 finally you should also add a summary section on how your research has helped you to generate ideas for your won photography…
