Rankin is a British photographer who mainly shoots portaiture and also shoots fashion photography. This photograph is a part of Rankin's 'Alive in the Face of Death' project from 2014. It contains over 70 photographs capturing those who have experienced terminal illness or have come close to death themselves.
He began this project after struggling to come to terms with the death of his parents, however he was inspired by the grief he experienced and so decided to celebrate life through this project.
This photograph is showing a model who has had her makeup done to create the mediated appearance of a corpse with a white face and stitches around the mouth. This is so the model appears to look like a corpse when she is actually already living. By adding tears to the models cheek it is accosiating the emotion of sadness with death itself. It is doing this to incorperate the image of death with the emotion experience when somone passes.
